Nailing the Negative

Showing a little skin can be flirty and sexy these days and the nail world is following suit. The Nagative Nails trend has taken the nail world by storm and we are in love! The negative space in the nail creates a line between a full out mani and bare nails.

negative nails

Here are a few of our favorite designs that incorporate the negative nail look! As you can see this design can be combined with geometric shapes, solid polishes, and crazy patterns. We have seen the negative nail trend take the stage at New York Fashion Week as well, so you know it will be hitting every nail salon very soon! Below is a list of our 8 favorite designs!

  1. Pastel linear pattern by A Little Polish is girly and fun with a little edge
  2. Funky geometric shapes by So Nailicious gives a grayscale mani some flair
  3. Haus of Lacquer rocks the negative space on a set of almond shaped nails
  4. Abstract patterned deep V by Chalkboard Nails is super funky and unique
  5. A discreet squiggle by Style Bistro screams trendy chic
  6. One Nail to Rule them All free hands daisies with a negative nail background
  7. @nailsandpolkadots frames a bare nail with four fun polishes
  8. Deep red polish combined with a negative nail on Lulu’s Blog is perfect for fall

DIY Negative Nails

Try the Negative Nail look on your own by using scotch tape or free hand! Here is a great video tutorial that shows a simple negative nail design using two polish colors and some skinny tape!

Love this look as much as us? Use a polish from our Scream Supreme collection and show us your negative nail art on Twitter or Instagram!

Q&A with Color Clutch Founder

Color Clutch, the innovative nail polish storage case has finally reached its Kickstarter goal! Delush Polish is so excited to see a trendy form of organization hit the market! We were able to ask creator, Katharine Contag some questions about her amazing invention!

View More: http://maggiestolzberg.pass.us/hill

DP: So we want to get to know you! Tell us a bit about yourself…
KC:
I am a California girl through and through– born and raised near San Francisco– but currently live in Miami, Florida. I love the sun and the ocean! I also love retail: I started my career as a sales associate at Nordstrom, and then worked for Walmart at their headquarters in Arkansas. Most recently I was the Director of Offline at BaubleBar where I managed retail spaces and wholesale partnerships for the early-stage fashion jewelry company.

In all of my previous jobs, my favorite part of the job is interacting with customers—and Color Clutch is no different. The best part of my day is when a customer tells me how much they love the product and how much they really need something like this. As Color Clutch expands in to new products, we’ll be keeping a close dialogue with our customers to make sure we’re building products that they want and need. I like to call it “innovation through conversation.”

DP: How did you dream up the idea behind Color Clutch?
KC:
My husband and I had just moved from New York to Miami and we were unpacking in our new home. He held up two ziplock bags full of nail polish and asked, “Where do these go?” I told him to just keep the bottles in the bag and place them on the closet shelf. As soon as I said that, I realized how ridiculous it was that I stored my nail polish that way! I immediately went online to purchase a compact solution, but couldn’t find anything. I was shocked. I knew I wanted something sleek that I could just place on the shelf. The kicker was it needed to store all different shapes and sizes of bottles. That’s when I began tinkering with a foam insert to design the perfect construction to hold any size or shape. After quite a bit of time perfecting the design and trying hundreds of different brands in the Color Clutch, I realized we were on to something!

1dccfacefed2d63df946ae101f4e11c8_large

DP: What is the story behind the name?
KC: I wanted to convey to the customer that this product is an accessory for nail polish. I love the word “clutch” because it highlights that accessory component, and is also a bit more elevated than the word “case” or “box.” Color Clutch is so much more than a box for your nail polish– it’s a high quality display case that can also double as a storage case.

DP: What’s the most unique aspect of your product?
KC: What really differentiates our product is the fact that it stores 18 bottles in just 2.5 inches of shelf space. Our patent-pending foam insert allows you to store bottles of all shapes and sizes!

8d58bd7f977a3b3c2009ed33f1f488c3_large

DP: What has been your biggest challenge throughout the process of starting a new product line?
KC: It’s so easy to make any old product – but what differentiates great products from average products is the quality and construction of the materials used. I’ve spent countless hours pouring over foam samples in various densities and colors. The construction and feel of the case is also very important and an area where I’ve spent a lot of time working with our manufacturers. Color Clutch needs to be a very durable product that feels great when a customer holds the case or inserts a bottle of nail polish into the foam. To me, finding high quality materials is one of the most important parts of this process, but also one of the most difficult.

DP: Can we expect to see Color Clutch in stores soon?
KC: We hope so! With that being said, our main focus right now is selling direct to customers via our website. It’s so important that we successfully ship a great quality product to everyone who has pre-ordered one—and in the timeframe we’ve promised. Once we have our operations and fulfillment streamlined, we’ll look to expand our sales channels in to wholesale.

Screen Shot 2014-11-03 at 8.21.04 PM

DP: Here at Delush we love color so this will come as no surprise… Do you have plans to bring Color Clutch out in more colors? If so what do you have in mind?
KC: We sure do! I love being in close communication with our customers, and because of that I want THEM to tell us what our next color should be! We’ll be announcing a voting contest soon for various color combinations we’re iterating on. Those on our email list will be able to vote first, and then we’ll advertise it via our social channels (@colorclutch on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook).

DP: You recently reached your Kickstarter Goal (major congratulations!), what did you do to celebrate?
KC: Thank you! It was so exciting to reach that goal –it symbolized validation of the product and the financial “green light” to proceed with Color Clutch.   To celebrate, I shared a bottle of champagne with friends and then woke up early to keep working. Reaching our Kickstarter goal means that now the real work begins!

DP: You are clearly a nail polish lover at heart, what are your go to shades?
KC:
I love very rich pastels: OPI’s “Mod About You” and Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics’ “Vapid” are two of my favorites. I also love a dark nail: I’ve been wearing lots of deep burgundy’s and purples this fall!

colorclutch-wip

DP: Any spoilers you’d like to share for what’s coming in the future?
KC: Our product ideas are generated from our customers: some women have asked for larger nail polish storage, and others have asked for help with their make-up kits. We pride ourselves on moving quickly and already have product concepts that we’re iterating through. I can’t wait to share more in 2015! 🙂
